About Uninterruptible Power Supplies
An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) stabilises the fluctuations in the normal mains supply and prevents adverse effects on computer equipment. Linetex strongly recommend purchasing a UPS. UPSs use a battery to provide power for several minutes*allowing enough time for you to realise there is a power outage, save all your work, and shutdown your computer equipment.
Having a suitable UPS and the associated shutdown software ensures an automatic, and graceful shut- down of the operating system and hardware in the event of mains failure. It is an effective measure for the prevention of data corruption, data loss and hardware failure.
Do you need one?
If you can answer No to any of the following you need to call Linetex:
- Do you have a UPS?
- Does your UPS have shutdown software?
- Do you test your UPS?
- Is your UPS over 3 years old? If it is,
- It needs to be replaced or at the very least have the batteries changed
- Do you regularly discharge and recharge the batteries?(1)
(1) Required as dictated by the manufacturer for maintaining the functionality and reliability of the UPS.
Servers are generally installed on standard electrical ring mains that have other equipment attached and power problems can often be attributed to the operation of this other equipment.
Implications of not having a UPS
- Loss of commercial data following the repair of software or equipment caused by mains problems
- The reliability of your network is compromised
- Loss of business due to down-time if the server fails
- Reduced productivity due to down-time waiting for staff to investigate problems caused by mains fluctuations, not just complete power failures
Benefits
- Data protection 24hr x 7 days
- Problems due to poor mains eliminated as potential cause of system problems
- Increased server up-time
- Protection against power cuts
- On-line monitoring and reporting of the mains fluctuations via installed software
* usually 5 to 20 depending on the UPS and equipment connected to it.
